#24in48 | Update Post

Obviously, this is where I'm going to be updating my progress during the forty eight hours of the 24in48 readathon. I like having a kind of easy place to do it all and have it all in one place. And, sure, I don't have to update on my blog considering I normally post on twitter, instagram, trying to remember litsy, but I really like doing it? it just doesn't feel right unless I'm updating my blog periodically with how much reading I got done.

For 24 hour readathons I usually do 4 hour chunks, but I don't have a set plan for when I'm updating for this readathon. Probably twice a day, maybe three if I get a lot of reading done. I'm probably going to spend most of one of the days listening to an audiobook to save my eyes because going to try and read a lot for the biannual bibliothon - which will have it's own update post!

Saturday - July 22nd
Time updating: 10:30am
Books:
Adaptation (#1) by Malinda Lo (finished -  )
Dog Songs by Mary Oliver (started and finished - 121 pages)
Kill or Be Killed, Volume 1 by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips (started and finished - 128 pages)
Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher (started and finished - 226 pages)

# of pages read: 639
# books read: 4
time spent reading: 3 hours, 29 minutes

Notes:
I loved Adaptation - no idea what it was about it, probably just right book, perfect time. I'd recommend checking it out, though, definitely enjoy Malinda Lo. Dog Songs was really good - and how couldn't I like a poetry collection completely about dogs? Kill or Be Killed was super interesting and kinda weird. Postcards from the Edge was something I didn't fully understand, but I enjoyed listening to her read it.

This updates kind of just for me, since I know people don't really read them - which is understandable, considering it is READING TIME. But if you are reading - let me know what you're currently reading / how the readathon is going for you.

Time updating: 7:30pm
Books:
Dimension W, Volume 1 by Yuji Iwahara (started and finished - 208)
Dimension W, Volume 2 by Yuji Iwahara (started and finished - 192 pages)
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuirre (started and finished - 169 pages)
The Gunslinger (Dar Tower #1) by Stephen King (started - 120 pages)

# of pages read: 520
total # of pages: 1,328
# books read: 3
total # of books: 7
total time spent reading: 7 hours, 53 minutes

Notes:
I forgot how good Dimension W is - have read volume 1 before, after watching the whole first season of the show, but that was a while ago so didn't remember much. Reading The Gunslinger for the third time - mix of audio and physical - and I'm determined this time to move onto the rest of the series.

Every Heart a Doorway was so fucking good? I loved it way more then I expected to - I've been seeing the hype since it came out, I just didn't expect to love it so much? I like portal fantasy, but I don't love it over anything else. Definitely recommend checking this one out.

end of day total books: 7
page count: 1,328
time: 7 hours, 53 minutes

Sunday - July 23rd
Time updating: 10:00pm
Books:
Hold Your Own by Kate Tempest (started and finished - 108 pages)
Dimension W, Volume 3 Yuji Iwahara (started and finished - 208)
Dimension W, Volume 4 Yuji Iwahara (started and finished - 208)
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Screenplay by J.K. Rowling (started and finished - 293 pages)
The Gauntlet by Karuan Riazi (started and finished - 294 pages)
The Gunslinger by Stephen King (continued - 20 pages)

# of pages read: 1,131
# books read: 5
time spend reading: 5 hours, 8 minutes

Notes:
I am very tired and loopy, even though I got enough sleep. My brain is so full of stories now with everything I read in the last two days. Loved both Dimension W volumes, and The Gauntlet. Enjoying The Gunslinger but didn't want to try and rush through to finish it, I could of it isn't a long book, but want to try and remember and move on with the series.

I think my one downfall with this readathon is I seem to only be able to read so much before my brain is like: no, cannot do this.

I had a fantastic time, as always, if you participated link me to your wrap up/update! As always, cannot wait for the next one.

Happy Readathoning!

24in48 | Readathon (July 22-23)

It's that time of year again! Time for the 24in48 readathon - a readathon where you try to read for 24 out of the 48 hours that the weekend entails. I've never made it to 24 hours and, honestly, probably never will with how bad my eyes have become (thanks astigmatism for giving me eye strain at the worst possible time always).

Anyway - I don't have a TBR ready or anything, just wanted to post about it so if you didn't know it was coming up, now you do, and also to post my sign up. I'll be posting mainly on twitter and instagram, of course.

However, I am planning to post a recommendation list on Thursday or Friday before the readathon of short novellas/books to help you try and power through. Some people can read the same book all day, both days, but I like to complete a few short things early on to feel like I'm getting shit done!

Let me know if you're taking part, and where you'll be posting. My favorite thing for readathons is seeing everyone reading!

#24n48 + #diverseathon

I meant to make this post at least a week ago but I've had eye strain for over two weeks now - it's pretty much better, which is how I'm currently able to type this out. It's been driving me insane, though. However - readathons, the best things ever.

24in48 is exactly what it sounds like - a readathon centered around trying to read for 24 hours within 48. Takes place between today and tomorrow (Saturday January 21st - Sunday January 22nd). I've never hit 24 hours, and I'm not sure I ever will just because of who I am as a person, but it's a lot of fun to try and get there. And I always read a lot, even if I don't quite get to 24 hours. Follow along on all social media platforms with #24in48.

(will probably end up taking part a lot with audiobooks so my eyes can mend up fully for the week to come)

Diverseathon! This is the second time a handful of booktubers, this time with a blogger and instagrammer, are running this readathon. I'll link a few things below but: Christina Marie's video, mostly because I feel like it has the most information in it. Basically, they really want to focus on #ownvoices this time around - and also not trying to stretch books into fitting into a "diverse" category.

Stretch yourself, read things that might make you uncomfortable - it's only the only way we can learn and grow. Growing pains are called that for a reason. I'm thinking of posting some diverse book recommendations this week, we'll see how well my eyes hold up. If not this week, then in the next few months - there's quite a few posts I've been meaning to do but, alas, eyes. I might post a TBR tomorrow, but I might just post a pile on my instagram of my TBR of diverse books (#ownvoices and not, just the pile I've got in view to remind me).

Dates: January 22nd - 29th

#diverseathon on all social media, and the conversation is fantastic. If you need recs for #ownvoices books, specific or broad, hit up the hashtag or the hosts in particular.

#24in48 Wrap Up

First of all - where have I been? Well, honestly, the answer is pretty damn simple and it comes in three parts: reading slump, which was from the stress and having to do a bunch of stuff related to family business-y stuff. And also that I've been kind of sick? I guess? I haven't been healthy, that's for sure, and if someone, anyway, could tell me why I'm having hot flashes I will give them my firstborn (joke will be on them but still).

Besides all of that, that isn't what this post is about. The 24in48 readathon happened over this weekend, and I didn't make a sign up/tbr post because I honestly though I'd get maybe six hours read, a book finished. And so I'm blown away at what I did get read.

The reason I didn't think I'd get much down is because most of Sunday was spent at a house party/wizard rock show seeing friends and melting (anything over like 75 at the moment is too hot for me and it's been in 90). It was well worth it, though, and a ton of fun.

I did get a surprising amount read Saturday, where I had the whole day to read, and spent 7 hours, 32 minutes of it reading. Sunday I basically just had the morning, not sure how late I'd be back and probably mentally exhausted by then, anyway.

Read over the weekend:

  • Fruits Basket: Collectors Edition, Volume 1 by Natsuki Takaya (started and finished - 400 pages)
  • Club Dead by Charlaine Harris (finished - 137 pages)
  • Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock #1) by Faith Hunter (finished - 340) (had listened to a little on Friday but not much)
  • Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris (started - 115 pages)
Overall it was pretty much a win in my opinion, especially because I was also low key taking part in the booktubeathon. With my recent book slumpy feelings (being too stressed to read) it really helped to just try and set time aside this time to read. I'm going to try and do the same next week, I'm technically still about two books behind on my read 100 books (as in book books) challenge I set for myself.

I can't promise I'll be back more this month or next - maybe in September, which should be after a few of the personal/family business stress things calm down (just thinking about it makes my chest tighten). Hopefully. Either way, I'll definitely be around for the nest bout of books at the end of August!

Total Time Spent Reading: 11:04
Total things finished: 3 (1 other started)
Pages read: 992

#24in48 Updates (16 +17)

I have no idea how this update post is going to work, I have a feeling a lot of my updating will be through social media (twitter, instagram, goodreads), but I wanted to have an update post. I'll probably update what I've read at the end of the days, I guess (and then my weekly wrap up will be a full wrap up of everything).

Head over to 24in48.com every six hours, they'll be doing giveaways and other things.

Hour Six Survey

  1. Where in the world are you reading from this weekend? Rhode Island
  2. Have you done the 24in48 readathon before? Yes, but I only read for like 12 hours, I think. Which isn't bad, but I can do better.
  3. Where did you hear about the readathon? Social media, blogs.
  4. What book are you most excited about reading this weekend? All the single issues, because I'm so behind, some trades. For book books, probably Six of Crows, Before the Awakening, and The Queen.
  5. Tell us something about yourself. I moved six months ago into a renovated mill building - loft style studio apartments - and also all of 2015 was kind of reading slump for me. Hoping to get out of it.
  6. Remind us where to find you online this weekend. Here! But also -twitterinstagramgoodreads

Hour Eleven Update

I really need to step up my game, but I was asleep for the first eight hours of the read-a-thon (rookie move, but I was very tired). So far, I've realized how much slower I'm reading them normal because I've got slight eye strain (my life, always, really at the moment. My heater dries out my eyes).

Anyway -
Hours read: 2 hours, 4 minutes
Books read:
Black Canary #6, Captain America: White #5, Coffin Hill, Volume 1: Forest of the Night, and Coffin Hill, Volume 2: Dark Endeavors

I was going to put them all out nice and neat - but I have reading to do, need to catch up and such. (Really quick, though, super enjoying Coffin Hill, and very glad I have volume 3 to read right away, because I'm just really enjoying it). What are you reading? How're you doing? Let me know!

Hour Thirty Four Update (I think?)

Math is hard when all you've been doing is reading, and you were a bit on the edge of eye strain when this read-a-thon started, and it's hard to combat that but also keep reading. Anyway - I think it's hour thirty four? It's some hour, alright?

I'm not sure I'll be getting to 24 hours, just because I got distracted yesterday and god damn my eyes, but most importantly I kind of feel like this read-a-thon is kind of getting my reading mojo back. I'm not sure I could ever get to the speed which I was reading in 2014, but I'd kind of like to. (The same book speed, with single issues, trades added to that. Ha, I have high dreams, alright?)

I've read quite a bit since the last update I did here, but I'm going to collect everything in a wrap up - I do a weekly wrap up, anyway, this one is just going to be completely 24in48 focused because I didn't read anything this week prior - so I'm just going to do slightly vague updated here.

So far I've read for about 12 hours (11 hours, 59 minutes) and am currently reading The Queen by Tiffany Reisz (about halfway done, probably). In the time between the last update and now I've also read another trade (Coffin Hill, Volume 3), a novella, a novel (neither on my original TBR stack, both digital), some single issues. Also listened to ten pages of Alexander Hamilton (the biography, this is going to take me a while), and also a little over a hundred pages of Monsters of Men

I'm really pleased with my reading, even though there's no way I'll get to 24 hours now, especially with my eyes. I'm still going to try, but I started to fall asleep last night at nine and couldn't look at a screen anymore, so we'll see how it goes. I do kind of want to try again on my own, though, before the next one, because why the hell not, right? (Aka: it's about the dead of winter in New England, it'll be better then going outside).

How are you doing? What are you reading? How do you have time to look at blogs?

Readathon | 24in48 | January 16 + 17

The 24 in 48 read-a-thon is exactly what it sounds like - trying to read for 24 hours during two days, 48 hours. I believe it came from 24 hour read-a-thons, because you can never read the full 24 hours during those (sleeping, eating, bathroom breaks). I've participated before, but I've never ended up having read anywhere close to 24 hours, and I'd kind of really like to get at least moderately close this time.

I don't have a stack together yet, but I'll post a picture probably the night before or morning of. My plan is to just make a giant pile and pick from it, and I'll probably bounce between books, single issues, and trade paperbacks just so I can try and keep going.

If you're interested the sign up post is here, and there's also more information. Obviously the goal is to try and get to 24 hours, but a lot of people never get it. I'd highly suggest joining in, though, it's always a ton of fun. I'm not sure how I'll be doing updates, definitely social media, but probably also something over here - just not sure how yet.

Let me know if you'll be taking part, and if you have any of your books picked out.

Happy reading!

Accidental 24in48 (a readathon) Wrap-Up (+ tiny updates)

Saturday I was just really struggling to write anything, I didn't know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go with any of my stories. And this had been going on for a few days. So, Saturday, I took a break and only write 4k and then watched some people play video games. And then decided to read, because I haven't had a lot of time to read this much and I was miss it.

And I was seeing all these people going to be reading as much as they could over the weekend, so I thought I'd join in. I didn't end up reading for a long time, no where close to 24 hours, but I was able to finish a few books, start others, it was fun. And I'm glad I did it.

I got off the computer at about seven thirty on Saturday to read and I think I was 100 pages into White Cat - which I finished. And then picked up Red Gloves - finished. And then Black Heart - also finished. I read the whole series in about 7 hours, I want to say. I don't know how it happened, but if you know the books you know they're not that long, and I loved it.

I've learned I definitely enjoy series more when I just read them like that, one after the other. And maybe other people would like to take their time, and I definitely want to with some series, but others, that I know I'll like anyway, flying through them is so much fun. I love just being locked in that world and marathoning series has definitely become a favorite thing to do this year, I've always wanted to do it, but this year I've actually done it a few times.

Books:
White Cat (Curse Workers #1) by Holly Black - had already started, had been about 1/3rd of the way through, but finished it.
Red Glove (Curse Workers #2) by Holly Black - read start to finish
Black Heart (Curse Workers #3) by Holly Black - start to finish
Chew, Vol 3: Just Desserts by John Layman - a graphic novel, started and finished, and was a ton of fun

Time spent reading: 8 hours, 30 minutes

I wish I had been able to take more time to read, because I guess I technically failed the objective, but everyone else reading and posting TBRs definitely pushed me to read. And I definitely, actually, think it helped, because the only reason I haven't read anything more is because I've been writing since I woke up.

I really like this idea, though, reading 24 hours over 48, mostly because it involved sleep and I'm currently at the point where I really like sleep (the other point is thinking sleep takes too much time, too many things to do. Which can also be fun). I think I'll probably end up honestly trying to read for that time over two days in December, I'm kind of planning on most of December being about reading and blogging, I'm really excited about it.

What did you read this weekend? Did you participate? (WriMos - What's your word count?)
